Generalized Coordinates

In many systems, Cartesian coordinates are not the most convenient choice.

Instead, we use generalized coordinates:

$$ q_1, q_2, q_3, \dots $$

These coordinates:

  • Completely describe the system
  • Are chosen based on convenience

Examples:

  • Angle $\theta$ for a pendulum
  • Distance along a path
