Degrees of Freedom

The number of independent coordinates needed to describe a system is called its degrees of freedom.

Examples:

  • Particle in space $\rightarrow$ 3 degrees of freedom
  • Particle on a line $\rightarrow$ 1 degree
  • Rigid body $\rightarrow$ 6 degrees
